Guide to the citizenship test
Everything that UHR and Migrationsverket have published about the test, gathered in one place. Every fact has a link to the source and a date when we read it. When UHR has not said something, we say so.
- 01 Who must take the citizenship test? The knowledge requirement applies to people between 16 and 66 years old who apply for Swedish citizenship. Grades can replace the test. Migrationsverket sends the offer.
- 02 Registration for the citizenship test Registration is closed right now. UHR will announce when it opens. You register with BankID, Freja eID or the code in the letter from Migrationsverket. The fee has not been published.
- 03 Test day: ID and what you can bring Three types of Swedish ID are accepted, not a foreign passport. Pen, eraser and simple earplugs are allowed. Phones, watches and headphones are not allowed.
- 04 What the citizenship test looks like Multiple choice questions in Swedish, on paper, with one correct answer. The test in August 2026 had about 60 questions in 90 minutes. The pass mark has not been published. The study material is called Sverige i fokus.
- 05 The result and what happens next The result goes automatically to Migrationsverket. The result from the test in August 2026 will be published in October. If you fail, you may get the chance to show your knowledge again.
- 06 Adjustments to the test Extra time, larger text, a desk that can be raised and lowered, a hearing loop, or your own room. You usually need a certificate. Apply for this when you register.
- 07 How to study for the test Read Sverige i fokus, listen to the audio, find out where you stand, practice your weakest chapters, practice the words, and take a timed test. This is our advice, not UHR's.
